The GOP gubernatorial front-runner Wednesday said he would help amend the Illinois Constitution to ban same-sex marriages if he were elected.
Sen. Bill Brady is the most conservative of the candidates and leads his rival Kirk Dillard by roughly 400 votes, a full week after the Republican primary.
“I’m trying to give the government back to the people,” said Brady.
In addition to a ban on gay marriages and civil unions, he is proposing a 10-year term limit on state House and Senate members, no restrictions are in place now, and a two-thirds vote requirement in the General Assembly for passage of sales or income tax increases.
Brady also wants to allow public schools to teach creationism on the basis of giving local school boards autonomy. His local government autonomy from the state and federal government is a well-respected idea, even among many independents and Democrats.
